The Different Imaging Scans Used in Asbestos Mesothelioma Detection

Sheldon Cooper

Over the years more has been discovered about the hazardous material asbestos and the diseases that it causes. Certain diseases like mesothelioma have become ever more common for those who have been exposed to the material in the first place. Even though there is no way to cure the disease, there are many different treatment methods which have shown promise in being able to alleviate the issues that the patient might be encountering. Lives have been extended as a result of the treatment which has been used on these patients.

Before any treatment can be started, the disease has to be detected. If you have been exposed to asbestos or think you might have been exposed, it is a good idea to make sure that you are being checked fairly regularly. One of the ways in which doctors will use to check you for disease is through the use of imaging scans. These will help the doctors to find hardened or affected tissues which might be affected by cancer. There are four main kinds of scans which are normally used. The doctors might use CT, MRI, PET or X-ray scans to detect asbestos related cancer.

CT Scans

One of the more in depth ways that a doctor can take a look inside the human body is through the CT or CAT scan. This is essentially an X-ray machine which scans a broad spectrum of different X-ray images. It combines X-rays taken from different angles and from different depths to find out more of what is going on under the skin. The images are restricted to black and white.

MRI Scans

The MRI scan is perhaps one of the most comprehensive manners of detection available. The system can be used over and over again without causing any risk to the patient. It uses electromagnetic radiation to produce a more realistic look at the inside of the human body. It is easier to identify tumors through the use of different colors to represent the different organs and other parts of the body.

PET Scans

The use of the PET scan is one of the most often used to detect tumors in the human body as related to asbestos cancer. This is where the patient is injected with a radioactive isotope which travels through the human body and reacts with the gamma radiation from the cancerous cells. When the scan is complete it is pretty obvious to see the locations of the tumors. The doctors can even see what kind of chemical reaction is happening in the body.

X-Rays

The first scan that a doctor will use to find out what the problem might be is the X-ray. Electromagnetic radiation is used to blast through the human body and collected on a plate. The flat two dimensional scan is able to pick up some of what might be going on. Doctors look for dark spots where there should not be any as well as any changes in other parts of the body. The results of this scan can lead to one of the others mentioned above.
