The Effects of Surgery for Treating Mesothelioma

Brian Bedell

While there is no known cure for mesothelioma, there is no shortage of ways to alleviate the pain and discomfort you might feel as a result. There are also many different methods which can be used to slow down the disease and even halt its progress of moving through your body. Some of the methods are more useful in slowing down the mesothelioma than others. The methods used will depend on the kind of mesothelioma you are dealing with and the patient. The majority of doctors will use a combined approach in order to deal with the disease.

Surgery is a very popular method of dealing with mesothelioma. It can be used in order to get rid of tumors as well as to alleviate pressure in the pleura and other methods to bring more comfort to the patient. The most common time to use surgery in dealing with mesothelioma is when you are dealing with stage 1 mesothelioma. This is because you will still be in pretty good condition and you can use the surgery to slow down the spread of the disease. Keeping it local will allow the doctor to more easily deal with the illness.

Performing a Biopsy

One of the common reasons why the doctor will use surgery for mesothelioma is if it is exploratory in nature. X-rays and CAT scans can only show the doctor so much. At some point, the mass will have to be inspected and diagnosed. This will help the doctor to know if they are dealing something which is malignant or benign. This is the only way to know what other methods might need to be used in order to help the patient to slow down the spread of mesothelioma to the rest of the body.

Performing Pleurocentesis

One of the most commonly affected parts of the body when dealing with mesothelioma is the pleura. This is the space which surrounds the lungs and other organs. When you are sick from mesothelioma, the pleura can be filled with a fluid which will cause the patient to be short of breath and experience chest pain when breathing. The fluid can become hard and cause more problems. In order to offer relief, the fluid will be drained from the chest through pleurocentesis. This is a procedure which can be performed as often as the doctor deems it to be appropriate. In most cases, this can be done through an outpatient setting.

What to Expect After Surgery

No matter what the results of the mesothelioma surgery, you can expect that there will be more to follow. This is because you will not be able to get rid of the mesothelioma through a surgery. It is only performed in order to get rid of masses or to alleviate pressure. As long as your condition does not worsen, the doctor may recommend for you to go through regular surgery procedures in order to make sure that you are able to remain in some semblance of health.
