What You Need for Surviving Mesothelioma

Andrei Toth

Anyone who has received the news from their physician that they have the cancer mesothelioma immediately wants to know what their chances are for surviving this cancer. With this cancer there is no one size fits all answer. The survival rate of this cancer is determined on a case by case basis. There are several varying factors which can make a difference in how long a person can survive this cancer after diagnosis. Although the survival rate for most that have been diagnosed with this cancer is commonly very low, recently some patients are living longer than before. The longer life spans of these patients can be attributed to more recent research which has lead to earlier detection and treatment of this cancer.

When the Cancer Is Discovered

Treatment of this cancer is determined by the stage which the cancer has been discovered in. If the cancer is found in a person during the early first and second stages of development then there are several treatment options available to them. The treatment options available for those who have this cancer in the early stages can significantly increase their chances of extending this life expectancy. Those who have their cancer diagnosed in the later third and fourth stages of this cancer have far fewer treatment options available to them and thus have a much shorter life expectancy.

Common Reason for Short Life Expectancy

The reason that many people are not able to have a long life expectancy after they have been diagnosed with mesothelioma is due to the fact that this cancer is generally not detected until it has reached its later stages of development. Typically this cancer quietly spreads in the body for a period of four to five decades after a person has been exposed to the elements which have caused the cancer to form. One a person begins to show signs of the cancer which has led them to seek a medical explanation; the cancer has spread from its place of origin to other places in the body.

Addition Factors

Other factors which can determine the type of treatment options available to extend a patients life expectancy include the operability of the primary tumor formed by this cancer. Younger patients who are in otherwise good health and have been diagnosed with the cancer in the first and seconds stages are typically those who are able to have their primary tumor removed with positive results. Typically older patients who have poor health, and those diagnosed in the cancer’s later stages, are not candidates for having their primary tumor surgically removed.

Factors for Treatment Plans

Some of the other health factors who are taken into consideration when determining a treatment plan for a patient at any age or stage of cancer development include the presence of diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. Any other diseases or health issues a patient may have are also taken into consideration when a treatment plan for a patient is being developed. Most physicians try to match a patient with the most aggressive possible treatment option in accordance with their current state of health.
